Move a disk from one NetApp controller to another controller ( unassign a disk from filer )

We have a Netapp 2050 filer with 2 controllers. Both controllers are having 10 disks each. I am looking to move  a disk from controller2 to controller1. How to do this?

Below command will show you all the disks in filer and which controller is owned these disks

FAS2050A> disk show
  DISK       OWNER
———— ————-
0c.00.4      FAS2050B
0c.00.9      FAS2050A
0c.00.2      FAS2050B
0c.00.3      FAS2050A
0c.00.11     FAS2050A
0c.00.1      FAS2050A
0c.00.12     FAS2050B
0c.00.6      FAS2050B
0c.00.19     FAS2050A
0c.00.5      FAS2050A
0c.00.8      FAS2050B
0c.00.17     FAS2050A
0c.00.0      FAS2050B
0c.00.14     FAS2050B
0c.00.15     FAS2050A
0c.00.16     FAS2050B
0c.00.10     FAS2050B
0c.00.13     FAS2050A
0c.00.7      FAS2050A
0c.00.18     FAS2050A

This is the filer view from FAS2050A ( to get better understanding of disk type, whether it’s data/spare/parity ordparity). In this picture you can see 0c.00.16 disk is currently assigned to FAS2050B ( controller2). I want to move  this disk in to FAS2050A (Controller1)

Ok, lets move on

FAS2050B> disk assign 0c.00.16 -s unowned -f

This will remove disk ownership from controller2

FAS2050A> disk show
  DISK       OWNER
———— ————-
0c.00.4      FAS2050B
0c.00.9      FAS2050A
0c.00.2      FAS2050B
0c.00.3      FAS2050A
0c.00.11     FAS2050A
0c.00.1      FAS2050A
0c.00.12     FAS2050B
0c.00.6      FAS2050B
0c.00.19     FAS2050A
0c.00.5      FAS2050A
0c.00.8      FAS2050B
0c.00.17     FAS2050A
0c.00.0      FAS2050B
0c.00.14     FAS2050B
0c.00.15     FAS2050A
0c.00.10     FAS2050B
0c.00.13     FAS2050A
0c.00.7      FAS2050A
0c.00.18     FAS2050A

NOTE: Currently 1 disks are unowned. Use ‘disk show -n’ for additional information.
Here we can see that disk 16 is not there in list and it is un owned.

FAS2050A> disk show -n
  DISK       OWNER                  POOL   SERIAL NUMBER
———— ————-          —–  ————-
0c.00.16     Not Owned              NONE   3SL0N4JZ00009044DC1R

Now i am going to assign this disk in to controller1 ( FAS2050A)

FAS2050A> disk assign 0c.00.16 -o FAS2050A

Sun Jul 31 18:28:26 AST [FAS2050A: diskown.changingOwner:info]: changing ownership for disk 0c.00.16 from unowned (ID -1) to FAS2050A .

Now we can see this 0c.00.16 disk is in FAS2050A (Controller1) and it will be the spare disk in controller1

FAS2050A> disk show
  DISK       OWNER
———— ————-
0c.00.4      FAS2050B
0c.00.16     FAS2050A
0c.00.9      FAS2050A
0c.00.2      FAS2050B
0c.00.3      FAS2050A
0c.00.11     FAS2050A
0c.00.1      FAS2050A
0c.00.12     FAS2050B
0c.00.6      FAS2050B
0c.00.19     FAS2050A
0c.00.5      FAS2050A
0c.00.8      FAS2050B
0c.00.17     FAS2050A
0c.00.0      FAS2050B
0c.00.14     FAS2050B
0c.00.15     FAS2050A
0c.00.10     FAS2050B
0c.00.13     FAS2050A
0c.00.7      FAS2050A
0c.00.18     FAS2050A

There is one more way we can change disk ownership between two controllers

FAS2050A> vol status -s

Pool1 spare disks (empty)

Pool0 spare disks

FAS2050A> vol status -s

Pool1 spare disks (empty)

Pool0 spare disks

RAID Disk       Device
———       ——
Spare disks for block
spare           0c.00.13
spare           0c.00.15
spare           0c.00.16
spare           0c.00.17
spare           0c.00.19

I want to move 0c.00.17 to controller2 ( to do this login in to filer advanced mode)

FAS2050A> priv set advanced
Warning: These advanced commands are potentially dangerous; use
them only when directed to do so by NetApp
         personnel.
FAS2050A*> disk remove_ownership 0c.00.17
Disk 0c.00.17 will have its ownership removed
Volumes must be taken offline. Are all impacted volumes offline(y/n)?? y

Then login to controller2
FAS2050B*> disk assign 0c.00.17
Sun Jul 31 15:55:11 GMT [FAS2050B: diskown.changingOwner:info]: changing ownership for disk 0c.00.17  from unowned (ID -1) to FAS2050B
FAS2050B*> vol status -s

Pool1 spare disks (empty)

Pool0 spare disks

RAID Disk       Device
———       ——
Spare disks for block or
spare           0c.00.12
spare           0c.00.14
spare           0c.00.17

To move out from filer advanced mode type below command

FAS2050B*> priv set

How to find out WWPN for NetApp Storage

Filed under: NetApp — Akther @ 7:19 pm

We have bought a new FAS 2050 dual controller storage box. Just want to see the WWPN information of the two fiber channel cards in NetAp. Below two commands are helpfull to see these information

 FAS2050A> sysconfig -v

slot 0: Fibre Channel Target Host Adapter 0b
                (Dual-channel, QLogic 2432(2462) rev. 2, 64-bit, <OFFLINED BY USER/SYSTEM>)
                Firmware rev:     4.5.2
                Host Port Addr:   000000
                Cacheline size:   16
                SRAM parity:      Yes
                FC Nodename:      50:0a:09:80:88:5d:49:b0 (500a0980885d49b0)
                FC Portname:      50:0a:09:81:98:5d:49:b0 (500a0981985d49b0)
                Connection:       No link

FAS2050A> fcp show adapter
Slot:                    0b
Description:             Fibre Channel Target Adapter 0b (Dual-channel, QLogic 2432 (2462) rev. 2)
Adapter Type:         Local
Status:                         OFFLINED BY USER/SYSTEM
FC Nodename:          50:0a:09:80:88:5d:49:b0 (500a0980885d49b0)
FC Portname:            50:0a:09:81:98:5d:49:b0 (500a0981985d49b0)
Standby:                 No

I was thinking why it’s showing  OFFLINED BY USER/SYSTEM.  Then i checked the filer view and it was showing interface is down

Then i tried to up the adapter and this was the issue actually. FCP  was not started.

FAS2050A> fcp status
FCP service is not running.

FAS2050A> fcp start
Mon Jul 25 19:01:41 AST [FAS2050A: fcp.service.startup:info]: FCP service startup
Mon Jul 25 19:01:41 AST [FAS2050A: scsitarget.ispfct.onlining:notice]: Onlining Fibre Channel target adapter 0b.
Mon Jul 25 19:01:41 AST [FAS2050A: scsitarget.ispfct.initFailed:CRITICAL]: Initialization of adapter failed on Fibre Channel target adapter 0b.

Then connect the cable in to 0b port and SAN Switch. Now everything looks fine

FAS2050A> fcp show adapter
Slot:                    0b
Description:             Fibre Channel Target Adapter 0b (Dual-channel, QLogic 2432 (2462) rev. 2)
Adapter Type:            Local
Status:                  ONLINE
FC Nodename:             50:0a:09:80:88:5d:49:b0 (500a0980885d49b0)
FC Portname:             50:0a:09:81:98:5d:49:b0 (500a0981985d49b0)
Standby:                 No

Cannot see newly added disks in MS SQL cluster

Filed under: MS Cluster,MS SQL Server — Akther @ 2:55 pm

There is a request from DBA team to add one disks from storage and assign to MS SQL 2008 server.  I have created a iSCSCi LUN and mount it to the server. Now we can able to see the newly created disk in Server.

After some time DB admin called me and said they cannot see that newly created disks in SQL Management studio while they try to take a backup of one particular database. Here is the screenshot. I have mount the drive as U but it wasn’t showing in SQL backup windows.

Ok, Need to troubleshoot further. MS SQL servers are configured in Cluster. I went to Server manager–> Features–> Failover cluster manager–> Storage–> Right click–> Add disk

Once we add we can see it this disks in Available storage area. Now we need to move this disk in to cluter resource. In this case SQL Server ( MS SQL SERVER) is the service resource

Could able to see this disks in SQL server cluster resource

Not yet done. still need to add some more steps to show this disks in to SQL Management studio backup screen

Go to Fail over cluster manager –> serives and applications–> SQL Server–> Other resources–> SQL Server –> Right click–> Properties

Select the dependencies tab–> select the disk and click insert

That’s it. Now we can see this disks in cluster as well as in backup windows

Here is my U drive and DBA team is happy. Thanks for Rafeeq to assist us to troublehoot this.

Welcome to Cloud.  Microsoft  announced the availability of  Microsoft Office 365, from June 28th onwards ,  the company’s newest cloud service.  It brings together Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Online, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync Online in an always-up-to-date cloud service, at a predictable monthly subscription.

It’s realy good to the organizations who don’t want to keep their Email/Sharepoint/Lync  infrastructure in Data center.

McAfee Email Gateway- How to release emails from outbound queue

Filed under: Exchange 2007,McAfee Email Gateway ( Ironamil) — Akther @ 10:10 pm

Couple of days back i could see that so much emails are in outbound queue in our SMTP gateway ( McAfee Securemail, formerly ironmail) due to an issue. Who ever worked on this securemail gateway they know’s we cannot release the email at a time. We need to pause the SMTPO queue then need to select the domain and release one by one.

I was searching how can we release all the emails in queue ? the answer is..

Telnet to the box and apply below commands ( This gateway is in DMZ zone and you have to open the port numbers in in your firewall to telnet to the box)

Securemail > Reset message smtpo domain.com

If you are trying to release all the emails at a time your Exchange server should accept all emails at a time.. By default 20 connections will allow for the domain. To see and edit this settings go to Hub Transport server–> Exchange Management Console –> Server configuration–>Hub Transport –> Double click the Hub transport server name –>

I had changed from 20 to 50 to accept more emails to our domain because i could see that more emails are in ready to deliver to domain.

Exchange version is 2007

Unable to add performance monitor counters in Windows 2008 Server R2

Filed under: Windows 2008 Servers — Akther @ 2:38 pm
Tags: ,

We were facing this issue in one of the Windows 2008 R2 x64 server and this server is the main Databse server in ERP farm ( MS Dynamics AX is the ERP product)

Ok, Just imagine the pressure from Application and DBA team to solve this issue because they cannot monitor the performance of database and other counters.

The following error occurred while loading performance monitor

Unable to add these counters:

\Memory\Available MBytes

\Memory\% Committed Bytes In Use

\Memory\Cache Faults/sec

\Memory\Cache Faults/sec

\PhysicalDisk(*)\%Idle Time

\PhysicalDisk(*)\Avg. Disk Queue Length

\Network Interface(*)\Bytes Total/sec”

Cause

Te issue was perfmon Counters were corrupted, and have to rebuild these with LODCTR from command prompt. (Run As Administrator)

Resolution

Open Command Prompt , type lodctr /r and press ENTER. This will repair the pointers

C:\Windows\system32>lodctr/r

You have to check is there any providers are disabled. You can check the status with lodctr /q.

[Windows SharePoint Services Performance Monitoring] Performance Counters (Enabled)
DLL Name: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\onetnative.dllOpen Procedure: OpenPerformanceData
Collect Procedure: CollectPerformanceData
Close Procedure: ClosePerformanceData
First Counter ID: 0x00002A0E (10766)
Last Counter ID: 0x00002A12 (10770)
First Help ID: 0x00002A0F (10767)
Last Help ID: 0x00002A13 (10771)

If it says (Disabled) next to a provider, you can enable it with lodctr/e:<provider name>.

Then try to open perfmon  from run it will work and there is no error

Thanks to Rafeeq who is my great colleague helped us to resolve this problem.
