Usefull P2V Migration tool – Disk2vhd

Tags: , ,

Disk2Vhd is a realy nice tool if you are looking to migrate physical server to virtual. It’s a free  tool from Microsoft. Can be download from below link

No need to install this tool. Just double click the exe and select the disks which you want to include.

This tool will take the snapshot of the system ( by using VSS) and create a VHD. We can import this VHD in to Hyper-V. Nice things is we could able to run this tool while system is in online.

Try it in Lab first then  migrate production servers. We have done couple of servers migrated in to Hyper-V.

RAID 5 reconfiguration in Dell Powervault MD1000 Storage

Currently 12 Hard Disk (SAS) are occupied in Storage box. We are going to add 3 more disks to increase the capacity of existing virtual disk ( It’s a DAS box )

Existing virtual disk contains 5 Hard disk. And 2 more going to add to increase  some space. i.e reconfiguring existing RAID-5

Steps need to taken

Insert disks in to Storage box physically. Once it insert we can see this disk status is ready. ( If you see disk status Foreign please refer below link to troubleshoot

Click Virtual Disk

Then select the Virtual disks that you want to re configure RAID 5 ( increase space)

Click Reconfigure from drop down list

Then we can see the newly inserted disk there in left side and add these disks in to virtual disk ( in our case we added 2 disks)

Next step we need to choose the RAID level . ( Our case existing is  RAID-5 but we can change to RAID6 or RAID O here)

Next screen we can see the previous and current disk numbers and size. Disk 12 and 13 are the new disks. See the size as well

Once it confirmed click ok . it will take hours to complete the RAID re configuration. Once it complete successfully you can see the new space in virtual disk.

Next Step

You could able to see this disk in windows host (disk management ) as unallocated.

If it’s windows 2008 R2 server then you can extend that disk just right click and extend. Other wise you have to use Diskpart command line utility to extend

Disk Part

Here is the example below how we can use Diskpart to extend the disk from command line ( below screenshot is not for this particular post. For this i have extended disk from Disk Management GUI)

Now we can see the extended disk space in Disk Managment

Hope this post has been informative for you. Thanks

MS SQL Connectivity Error – A network-related or instance-specific error

I have installed SQL Managemant studio in my windows XP machine. I was trying to connect one of my SQL server. OOPS …the below error pop up

Below three steps i found to resolve this issue.

1) Check the SQL Server Browser service is started in SQL server ( If not start this service. you have to restart the SQL server Service as well)

2) Check TCP/IP is enabled in SQL Server Configuration Manager ( Start –> Programs –> SQL Server 2008 –>Configuration Tools. If it’s disabled make it enable.

3) Give the Servername\instance name while connecting from SQL Management Studio.

Hope you will be able to connect the SQL server now. I was able to connect when i follow above 3 steps.

How to clear Foreign Disk in Dell PowerVault MD1000 Storage

Filed under: DELL Storage — Akther @ 12:51 pm
Tags: ,

We were in a cituation that needs to extend the virtual disk capacity which is pulled from Dell MD 1000.

So we got three  new 300 GB SAS drives and going to insert them in to empty slot in MD1000. Before doing any reconfiguration in MD1000 you must take the full back up of the data where you are re sizing.

Inserted 3 HDD in to empty slot and went to Dell Open Manager to see the status of these disk. It has to be appear as un assigned disk.

But one of the disk is showing Foreign Disk . And we can’t use this disk until it become normal data disk. In order to get rid of this we need to clear the attribute from PERC. Here is the steps

Go to Storage –> choose PERC 6/E Adapter  –> On the Properties tab click on “Information/Configuration”

In the “Controller Tasks” drop down of Avaialble Tasks you should see an option for “Clear Foreign”. Select this–> Click on “Execute” which is just below the drop down.

Yup. It’s become normal disk and we can use this to add in to existing RAID.

MS DPM 2010 – First look

Filed under: Microsoft DPM 2010 — Akther @ 4:01 pm

It’s always good for an IT infrastructure person to know multiple Backup softwares. Yes, I too have a chance to get in touch with Microsoft DPM 2010. Here is my first look with DPM 2010. I hope i could be able to deliver more DMP blog post in coming days.

It’s purely designed for Microsoft Infrastructure. But cerain Linux flavours can be backup if it’s running in Hyper-V

DPM supports Disk, Tape and Cloud based Backup and Recovery

DPM can integrate with MS SCOM 2007

Supports Bare Metal Restore  ( Imaging)

A Single DPM 2010 Server can handle 80 TB per Server

DPM can backup 100 Servers

DPM can backup to 2000 SQL Databases

DPM is easy to setup and not complicated compared to Symantec NetBackup

Most importent it’s license scheme is very easy. If you buy DPM enterprise License you can backup MS SQL, Exchange, Sharepoint etc. While if it’s Netbackup we have to buy separate agent license. License wise DPM 2010 is inexpensive.

Some of the dis advantages i could see with this product is we can’tt take VmWare enviornment backup. And DPM will not support Granular recovery of single  Email from MS Exchange Server. Symantec will support both and we hope in later Microsoft will think about this.

Dell PowerVault MD 1000 Storage – WalkThrough

Filed under: DELL Storage — Akther @ 2:35 pm

I have got a chance to configure Dell MD 1000 DAS ( Direct Attach Storage) Array recently. Would like to point out few of the features  and other stuffs here about this wonderful product.

This storage is usefull if you want more storage space and you dont have enough budget to roll out a iSCSI or FCP storage infrastrucutre.

– Contains 15 drives ( SAS or SATA) can be able to expand up to 45 disks ( The enclosure can be daisy-chained with up to two additional enclosures)

– There are two modes in this storage , below are the short description

Unified Mode

In unified mode, a SAS host ( Server) can communicate with up to 15 drives in the enclosure via a single EMM, or
up to 45 drives in three enclosures daisy chained together.

Split Mode

In split mode, the enclosure is split into two virtual groups, with up to eight consecutive drives (slots 7-14) controlled by the primary (left) EMM. The remaining drives (slots 0-6) are controlled by the secondary (right) EMM. That means we can assign one group in to one host and another in to second host. Splitting the storage space.

You must select either mode using the enclosure mode switch on the front panel of the enclosure before powering on. If you are setting mode after power on need to reboot the enclosure again.

– There are two ports on the rear side of enclosure. These ports are using either to connect to host ( server) or to expand the enclosure.

In Port : Provide SAS connection for cabling to host ( server) or next upchain expansion enclosure (unified mode only).

Out Port : Provide SAS connection for cabling to the next downchain expansion enclosure in a daisy chain
(unified mode only).

Enclosure Alarm : An audible alarm will be activate if any of the following component fail. It will sounds continusoly. If an any non critical errors then the alarm sounds every 10 seconds.

a) Two or more fan blowers have failed or a power supply/cooling fan module is not installed.

b) One or more temperature sensors are in critical range.

MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert) has back to the arena

Filed under: Latest Stuffs — Akther @ 6:42 am

We all knew that how much impact had created by Microsoft MCSE  certification in IT industry in  1990’s on wards. It was started with WIndows NT and continued untill windows 2003 OS. Many of the people took this certifiaction including me to leverage the skill sets and to impress the potential employers.

After the release of Windows 2008 the new certification called MCTIP came in to the picture and they pull back the MCSE certification which was the most recognized certifiation in IT industry.

Now Microsoft officially declared that MCSE certification is coming back. But it’s in cloud technology. See what they are saying from below link
